Wirral Bonsai Show held each year at Gordale Garden Centre is a club members show typically held over the three days of the August Bank Holiday. This year it was made up of 21 individual Bonsai which are typically bigger than Shohin along with 10 Tokonoma displays with trees ranging from mame to Shohin. The pre-selection club night ensured a very high standard of trees were made available for the show, and all beautifully presented on the day. This year we were proud to host Harry Harrington of Bonsai4me fame, professional Bonsai artist and author, who judged the trees, gave helpful tree critiques to members and also did a carving demo on one of the member’s large Japanese Yews over the Sunday and Monday. Many visitors sat and watched the process of ageing the trunk by carving the deadwood. Alex Rudd from the EBPC also visited with his EBPC shop of exhibition grade pots and a very special Japanese painted pot display all made by one pot maker. This was a highlight for many of the visitors, especially the large number of non-Bonsai public visitors. We were also very pleased to welcome back Mark Kennerley from Green Dragon Bonsai who had a very busy weekend selling everything you need for your bonsais, from soil, pots, wire, tools, fertiliser and trees. He brings his shop every year and is also a highly treasured club member for the invaluable service he provides. A special thank you should be made to all the club members who helped over the weekend. From the 16 members who came on the Thursday to help set up the stands, to the many teams who manned the show over the weekend, and the members who even stayed behind afterwards to break down the stands and put them back into storage ready for next year. And finally, a huge mention to our club president, Andy Hardman, without his drive, passion, superb horticultural knowledge and commitment to the club we would not be half the club we are today. We are all now looking forward to 2020 and thinking about the our perfect vision for our displays...
